Sabres fall to the Blackhawks, Pominville Injured

After a two goal lead in the first with goals from Stafford and Roy the Sabres allowed 4 unanswered goals, eventually falling to the Blackhawks 4-3.  However, the storyline of the night was the injury to Pominville who luckily escaped a questionable hit with only a concussion and some stitches.

The Sabres started off looking like they’ve recovered from their Saturday night loss to the Rangers.  A quick goal from Stafford 14 seconds in and Roy netting his 4th of the season (giving him the NHL lead in goals) was a good start.  However shortly after Niklas Hjalmarsson hit Pominville directly between the numbers up against the boards.  Pominville’s head bounced off the glass and he fell to the ice.  Scary moment for sure as Pominville was carted off on a stretcher, never a good sign.  Eventually reports came out of the locker room that it was “just” a concussion and a few stitches.  See the video below…

The only good thing I see in that video is Connolly being the first man into the scrum afterwards.  It’s about time he shows up in a leadership role on this team and that’s a good start.

The hit was clearly dirty no matter what the Blackhawks were saying on Twitter.  Hjalmarsson has a hearing scheduled for right about now so we should find out if he’s getting anything more than the major and game misconduct shortly.  It should be more for sure, it’s clearly between the number which is illegal even when the player has the puck, let alone when they don’t.  It’s not much different from the Ovechkin/Campbell hit and the Blackhawks wanted the book thrown at Ovechkin.  What comes around…

After the hit the Sabres never seemed to play the same.  The game as a whole slowed down and the Blackhawks were never really challenged again minus a few close calls in the last minute of play with an extra skater out there.

The Sabres attempt to get their second win of the season against the crippled Devils who only dressed 15 skaters yesterday.  Montreal comes to town Friday night and then the Sabres travel to Chicago looking for some redemption, maybe it won’t be a horrible thing if Hjalmarsson isn’t suspended.
