Sabres vs. Leafs – In Between the Games

Glad to say that hockey is finally back, well sorta…at least the pre-season is.  With the delayed rebroadcast of the game being blacked out in the Buffalo area I’m glad I had a chance to go to the game as a lot of young players looked like they had a shot to make the team and some veterans impressed.

Kassian was easily the most outstanding of the young guys.  He has speed and physical play, something that this team needs more of.  With him being too young to send to Portland chances are he’ll be back in the junior leagues but I wouldn’t rule him out completely.  With some building off a strong showing Saturday night he could be fighting for a spot on this roster.

Stafford was also actually somewhat impressive to watch for a change.  He’s been pretty disappointing the last few seasons but Saturday he looked much more physical and willing to fight for the puck.  There were a few times I didn’t even recognize him as his style of play seemed to change dramatically.  Now it is just the pre-season and they were playing Toronto’s B and C teams (is their A team much better though?) so it could be a flash in the pan but it is something to look forward to.

Luke Adam was a bit of a let down in my opinion also.  I was looking forward to seeing him play after the showing he had at the World Juniors but it just wasn’t there Saturday night.  It could be nerves and adjustment to the big leagues but I was expecting slightly more.  He still didn’t look completely horrible and with a few years of play at the lower levels I think he has a chance to be a star.

Tonight the Sabres travel up the road to visit Toronto for a rematch.  Sabres.com has posted the lineup which is fairly different compared to Saturday’s game.

42 Nathan Gerbe – 37 Matt Ellis – 25 Mike Grier

21 Drew Stafford – 9 Derek Roy – 12 Mark Mancari

55 Jochen Hecht – 28 Paul Gaustad – 8 Cody McCormick

Paul Byron – Luke Adam – 54 Zack Kassian

3 Jordan Leopold – 4 Steve Montador

6 Mike Weber – 44 Andrej Sekera

34 Chris Butler – Dennis Persson

40 Patrick Lalime, 1 Jhonas Enroth

Nothing really stands out in the lineup as they give some more new guys a chance to show what they have.  Miller will have the night off as Lalime will see his first trip to the crease this year splitting the time with Jhonas Enroth who had a decent showing Saturday night.  Ennis was supposed to be in the lineup but will miss it as he is out on family matters.

The game will be airing live on NHL Network for everyone outside of the Buffalo area.  If you’re in the Sabres broadcast range you’re stuck with radio or alternative means.
